21.08.10 - CINCINNATTI MASTERS ATP 1000

What a night for Cyprus Tennis in Cincinnatti!!

Our Champion Marcos Baghdatis proved once more, not only that he deserves the title of the "most improved player of 2010" but also that he deserves the top spots of the World's ATP Ranking.

The World's number one Rafa Nadal has been knocked out of the Cincinnati Masters by our Champion, Baghdatis winning the quarter-final 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.  Our Champion goes through to meet Switzerland's, No. 2 in the world, Roger Federer in the semi-finals while the other match-up is an All-American affair with Andy Roddick facing Mardy Fish.

Our Champion showed from the start of the match, that he possessed the necessary confidence and maturity to take on Nadal in this ATP 1000, 7th time clash, among the two players.  Nadal who double-faulted at break point with the game at 4-4 in the third set, proved unable to continue the third-set nerve-breaking battle, with the 20th ranked Baghdatis to serve out for the Cyprus victory.

"I was serving pretty big," Baghdatis said. "Basically I took my chances, and other times I played him I had chances and I didn't take them.  Maybe I'm more mature now, and I took the chances that I had to take and won the match."

The Cyprus Tennis Federation would like to congratulate our Champion and his coaching team for their victory and wish them all the best for the rest of the matches that follow.
