23.01.09 - AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2009

After an astonishing performance today, our Champion Marcos Baghdatis, did not manage to reach the quarters of this year's Grand Slam in Australia, losing the early morning battle, against the World's No. 3, Novak Djokovic, 6-1, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

In a match that lasted more than three hours, ending up at 2:30 am, inside a fully packed Rod Laver arena, Baghdatis showed that he is really back in business, showing the best early prospects for a successful year in 2009.

Marcos, although starting the match kind of hectic, he had all the chances to win the second set where he was leading by 4-1 against the Serbian.  The level of tennis played by both athletes was extremely high, despite playing during the early hours of the morning.

Marcos' performance proved once more that the Cypriot warrior deserves to be in the top spots of the World ATP Rankings and surely gave him a positive psychological boost for the year to come.  We are very confident that our Champion will fully recover from a bad year in 2008 where he was troubled by injuries, and will offer Cyprus again, some great tennis moments.
