Spaniard Feliciano Lopez saved three match points against our Champion and number 10 seed Marcos Baghdatis, gaining the battle in the round of sixteen, 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6, 8-6 to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Monday.
The 26-year-old left-hander, seeded 31, was staring defeat in the face when serving at 4-5 0-40 down in the final set but saved all three match points, to hold serve. He then managed to break Baghdatis, a semi-finalist two years ago in the Championship on grass, to seize the initiative and confidently served out for the quarters. Our Champion, despite his unlucky defeat, once more proved that he is already back on track, and he is ready to perform at his best, in the upcoming tournaments to follow.
Baghdatis, after his exhibition match in Greece on the 8th, he will immediately join the Cyprus Davis Cup team, in order to lead our squad at the upcoming tie for the 2nd group at Porto - Portugal, on the 18th of July.
Lopez, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2005, his best result at a grand slam, now takes on Russian Marat Safin or Swiss 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka.
