25.01.08 - AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Our Champion Marcos Baghdatis did not manage to overcome the early morning battle against Leytton Hewitt of Australia, after a tought five-set match, 6-4, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6, 3-6.

The battle started right before midnight in Australia and lasted nearly 4 hours and 45 minutes with the final set ending at around 4.30 am.  Baghdatis who suffered a sprained ankle at the beginning of the third set, managed to recover and took the match into the final set after being down 5-1 in the fourth, winning the set 7-6 after saving several match points.  Our Champion played superb tennis throughout the match and proved once more that he is, and will remain, a true fighter on court, congratulating Hewitt for his victory at the end of the match.

During this match Marcos showed us once more, his on court professionalism, his excellent character and high level of sportsmanship, despite the unreasonable and unjustified allegations that he suffered from the Australian media on Friday, right before the match.
